Lunch Box Options

Bentgo Lunch

Hi Skyline Parents, in case you're interested, here are some lunch box options that are great for kids!
If you're looking for a new lunch box, it should be leak-proof, hard-sided to survive drops, easy to clean, easy for your child to open, and a bonus if it's insulated to keep foods cold or warm until lunch time. Oh, and somewhat stylish and cool if you want to convince your child to use it! The following products are also BPA-free. I've done all the research for you, so all you have to do now is decide on a lunch box and start making some awesome lunches for your child!
Bento boxes may be the best choice for kids who want a variety of foods for lunch. They are similar to traditional Japanese bento boxes which have multiple compartments to keep foods separate. My personal recommendation from experience is the Bentgo Kids Lunch Box (available at or It meets all the criteria above, with a durable outer cover, and a removable inner tray which is microwave- and dishwasher-safe. This has kept my daughter's food intact everyday and I can easily fit a full-size sandwich (cut in half and stacked) in the largest compartment. For cold lunches, I can prep the night before and toss the Bentgo in the fridge overnight. Plus, if you sign up for their free e-book or post an Amazon review, they will send you a free compartment tray! Recommended for ages 3-7. Available in purple, blue or green.

A similar bento box option is Yumbox which is marketed for kids and adults. The Yumbox Panino contains a 4-tray insert or the Yumbox contains a 6-tray insert (recommended for toddlers - age 8) and you can mix and match their trays and inserts. Yumbox also sells an insulated cooler bag that fits the Yumbox lunch box and stores it flat. Available on or in a plethora of descriptive colors: bijoux purple, espace blue, parisian pink, rocket red, pomme green, frutti blue.

Pottery Barn Kids sells the Spencer Bento Box Container and a multitude of other lunch storage options including stainless steel or clear containers. Available at

For older children, or if you're looking for a non-leak-proof, all-in-one bento box option, I recommend the Bentgo All-In-One Stackable Lunch Box. It is sleek and easy to transport and my older child has been using this for several years. It also comes with built-in plastic silverware and you can purchase additional accessories if you need a leak-proof cup, sauce container or an insulated bag. Available in green, blue, purple or grey. They are also offering a free Bentgo lunch box just for signing up for their e-book! That's like 2 lunch boxes for the price of one! Now mom or dad can take one to work too! Also, if you're searching for an eco-friendly container for salad, they recently unveiled their Bentgo Salad which, if you ask me, looks super cool and makes salad look more appealing! Available on or

For warm lunches, the THERMOS brand has been around for decades and I highly recommend their THERMOS Foogo insulated food jars for keeping foods at the right temperature. The THERMOS Foogo version has an ergonomically designed lid with a rubber grip which makes it easier for smaller hands to open independently and the scratch-proof base will survive drops. (The older THERMOS version (not marked Foogo) does not have a rubber grip.) This double wall vacuum insulated jar keeps food cold for 7 hours and warm for 5 hours. I pack my daughter's lunch at 7:00am and it is still warm at 11:45am! Available in a variety of color and character options everywhere THERMOS is sold including Target. Pro Tip: Do NOT tighten the lids too tight, as kids (and adults) often have difficulty unscrewing the lid!

For beverages, Nalgene makes several bottle options. The best leak-proof bottle for kids is Nalgene On The Fly (OTF). At 12 ounces, it is easy to clean, easy to open/close and is available in several colors and designs everywhere Nalgene is sold including Target or at (free shipping with $10 minimum purchase).

Parents, I understand that packing lunch for your child can be a nightmare, so these recommendations are all-in-one containers that can easily be reused over and over again, saving you money and the environment. Did you know that ziploc/plastic bags have an enormous impact on the environment and can take approximately 400 years to biodegrade? A reusable all-in-one lunch box will also save your child time during lunch from having to open several, difficult containers, and thereby, allowing them more time to enjoy your well-planned meal and eat a variety of foods. Then, this will hopefully also save you time in the evenings when it's time to wash your child's lunch box.
I'll be adding more information about planning easy, healthy lunches, so please come back and check my blog soon!
